Medication
"When your child needs medication..."
Ok, so now you have come to a point where you or your child's doctor believe that medication
can help. Most children can be helped by medication but they need to remain under a
psychiatrist care. Here is a list of considerations:
- Review all the choices available.
- Know what the possible side effects are.
- Don't be afraid to do your research.
- Get a second opinion, especially if your child needs several medicines.
- "Start low, go slow"
Remeber that medication takes a while to work. The results are not immediate.
A combination of therapy and medication will make a lot more difference than just medication alone.
It is scary to put your child on medations, especially the ones that have to monitored,
so PLEASE - ASK QUESTIONS!!!
Most children, I am taking about younger kids because teenagers would require
a new web page entirely, will take the medications because it will become habit. Plus,
if you use postive re-enforcement, a child will associate good things with
taking the medications. I believe people, especially children, actually prefer
to be happy and not be the little monsters they act like sometimes. So we have to
help them learn to be happy. If you are cheerful and confident about the meds then your
child will likely be as well.
